Switch Chat on for an application
Chat is enabled or disabled for each application of your workspace (your tenant), and the switch lives in the Identity Server, not in Chat. This page explains what the setting means and how to check it.
What Chat enabled means
Section titled “What Chat enabled means”Chat is a platform application: it belongs to no tenant. Each of your tenant applications uses it, and the Identity Server records for each one whether it may. Chat shows that value as Chat enabled or Chat disabled.
- Every application of your workspace can use Chat unless someone switched Chat off for it.
- Conversations always live inside one application. If Chat is disabled for an application, nobody can chat inside it.
- The setting is per application. Turning Chat off for one application does not affect the others.
Who can change it and where
Section titled “Who can change it and where”A tenant admin does this in the Identity Server, where a platform application can be switched off for one application of the tenant. Chat Administration has no switch for it: the Applications tab only shows the current state.
Switch Chat on
Section titled “Switch Chat on”-
In the Identity Server admin UI, open the application and make sure Chat is not switched off for it. The steps are in the Identity Server documentation.
-
Make sure the application is active in the Identity Server. Chat cannot be used in an inactive application, and the Applications tab marks it “inactive in Identity Server”.
-
Return to Chat. To see the change at once, open Administration and select Refresh from Identity Server. This needs
administration.manage. Without it, Chat picks the change up on its own within about 15 minutes. See Refresh from the Identity Server.
Verify
Section titled “Verify”- Open Administration, then the Applications tab. Your application shows Chat enabled.
- Open the workspace picker. On the Choose where to chat screen the application is a normal, selectable entry.
If Chat is off for an application, it appears greyed out with the note Chat off, and its tooltip reads “Chat is switched off for this application”. When no application of the workspace has Chat, the screen says “Chat isn’t switched on for any application you can use in this workspace.”
What people see
Section titled “What people see”Applications with Chat off are visible but cannot be opened, in the picker and in the top-bar application switcher. In Roles & permissions, only applications with Chat enabled appear in the Where list, so you cannot grant Chat permissions inside an application that has Chat off. The Tenant-wide (administration) option is always there.
